Samuel Rockwell, 97, a longtime Mentor resident, passed away April 8, 2018. He was born November 23, 1920 in Cleveland.

Mr. Rockwell retired from the Cleveland Fire Department Station 31, after 35 years of service. He was a drill Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II. He raised his 3 sons in Euclid with his wife Catherine (Kay) of 63 years. He was the founder and President of the Northeast Ohio Umpire Association and umped for more than 15yrs. He was also a Baseball Coach for many years for his 3 son's little league teams growing up. He loved to golf and spend time with his family and friends. He was an avid baseball fan and even up until his early 90's was a big supporter of his Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren's sporting events. He spent most of the last 2 years of his life being cared for by Jodi Lynn in her home.

Survivors are his sons, Samuel Rockwell Jr., William (Nancy) Rockwell, and Thomas Rockwell; grandchildren, Samuel "Butch" Rockwell V., Julie (Ryan) Rogers, Drew (Maleana) Haman, Wendy Vlach, Allison (Mark) Wegener, Halle (David, Deceased) Robinson, Michael (Lena) Rockwell, Billy (Michelle) Rockwell, and Cassie Rockwell. He is also survived by 17 great-grandchildren, and his brother, Stillman Rockwell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lucille Rockwell; and his sisters, Gert, Lucille, Nell, and Edith.

The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.

A funeral service in honor of Sam will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, April 19, 2018, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Mentor Cemetery.
