Kenneth Lee LaVan, beloved husband of Davie LaVan, passed from earth into Glory on Sunday, August 6, 2017, at Hillcrest Hospital, Mayfield Heights. A resident of Painesville Twp. for 51 years, he was 82 years old.

Born in Dixonville, PA, on November 4, 1934, Mr. LaVan was the adored brother to his four siblings. Losing his father at just four years old, Mr. LaVan developed a steely determination that every challenge not only could be overcome, but also would be overcome.

Armed with belief of a better life ahead, Mr. LaVan joined the Army at age 18 and was a skilled member of the 82nd Airborne, completing 32 jumps in proud service to his country. Utilizing the G.I. Bill and marrying his bride, he obtained a civil engineering degree from University of Indiana and moved soon after to Ohio. In 1983, he founded the Cleveland-based construction firm Utilicon Corporation and continued to lead it until his death.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years: Davie LaVan; sons: Michael (Maria Regina) LaVan, Gregory (Rhonda) LaVan; grandchildren: Michelle, Kenneth and John LaVan and Anthony; siblings: Joyce (Stephen) Widynski, Donald (Marcia) LaVan; and brother-in-law: Donald Rankin; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his parents: Harvey and Violet LaVan; and sisters: Nancy Rankin and Audrey Buterbaugh.

A funeral service will be held at 5:00pm on Saturday, August 12, 2017, at Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center (8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060). The family will receive friends from 2p.m.-5p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.

Entombment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Painesville.
