John G. Smeltzer, of Mentor, passed away September 9, 2018 at his home with his family by his side. He was born February 25, 1934 in Omaha, Nebraska.

John owned and operated Sparkle Wash of Lake County for 46 years and took great pride in his work. He was a U.S. Marine veteran who enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his family. He spoke often of his love of flying and of his days as a private pilot. John especially loved watching the float planes on his dream vacation to Alaska in 2011.

He was a hands-on husband, father, and grandfather who supported his grandkids in all their events and his kids whenever he was asked for advice or to lend a hand. His great sense of humor kept everyone laughing. John was known for his whistle, which he always joked that was the one thing he wanted to leave to his kids and grandkids.

Survivors are his wife of 51 years, Kathleen; children, Lynn and Eric Smeltzer; grandchildren, Johnny and Nicky Smeltzer; and his sisters, Betty (Bob) Rovtar, and Jean Boos.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Hazel Smeltzer.
