James Richard O'Connell passed away on his 77th birthday with his family by his side. He was born July 15, 1940 in Cleveland.

Jim and his wife Beverly were married for nearly 53 years after meeting at Ohio University. Jim was the owner of Mining Tools and helped develop the "dust hog" which revolutionized the coal mining industry. He sold the company in 1979 to a Fortune 500 company. Jim became a "gentlemen farmer" on his Kirtland land living there for 35 years. He recently moved to Naples, Florida where he wintered for over 20 years. Jim passed on his love of fishing, boating and skiing to his sons and in his later years playing poker. Animals were always a part of his life. His pets Sophie and Coco were always near him.

Jim was the beloved husband of, Beverly (nee Krawczyk) O'Connell; proud father of, James P. O'Connell and Michael D. O'Connell; dear papa to, Caitlin, Michael T., Lauren and Lindsay. He was the uncle of Linda Debernardi and Karen Smith; brother in law of Arlene and Robert Wilk and a dear friend to Bob Mance for over 40 years.

Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Saturday July 29, 2017 at Divine Word Church, 8100 Eagle Rd., Kirtland, OH 44094. Please meet at the church.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Brunner Sanden Deitrick Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8466 Mentor Ave., Mentor, OH 44060.

Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery, Chardon.
